Brush written in black ink on bolts of silk, these early manuscripts are more than five centuries older than any other known and they correct many defects of later editions: some "chapters" (poems, really ) follow a more logical sequence: their verses restore lines long lost(as may as three in some poems): their grammar and vocabulary are much more specific, making it easier for the translator to discern the author s intent. That is why readers of fine literature hailed the discovery, in 1973, of two ancient texts of the Te~Tao Ching which were found in the tomb of a Chinese nobleman who had been buried in 168 BC. Although the Te~Tao Ching is widely read, the laconic Classical Chinese in which it was written, the author s punning and enigmatic style, and the imperfect state of the Chinese originals make the brief poems that comprise it difficult to understand at times. ~Among the most popular works of world literature, Lao Tzu s Te~Tao~Ching has been treasured for millenia because of its poetic, occasionally cryptic, statement of life s most profound and elusive truths. no library markings, store stamps, stickers, bookplates, no names, inking, underlining, remainder markings etc ~first edition so stated. 8º dustwrapper in protective plastic book jacket cover.
